Academic Logo
The client needed a rebuild of their logo to express a deeper connection to their vision and purpose as a Catholic School. Although the old logo is visually nice, it lacked clarity of what type of school they were and the tagline too generic.
I took the opportunity to dig into the symbolism of the catholic church, education, and studied the mission and vision statements of this particular school. The idea behind the new logo was to give the school a seal or coat of arms - something most established catholic schools have. This school was established in 1947, but as I researched, no seal was ever created.
The shield forms the three points for the Trinity, Intersections on shield form the Cross.
Symbols on shield (clockwise from top left):
- Book and Torch: Enlightenment
- Christian ICXC / NIKA : “Jesus Christ Conquers”
- Globe: symbol of the earthly walk of humankind and its salvation. It also depicts travel and our common existence as earth-bound beings.
- Fleur de lis: Symbol for the lily, a sign of the resurrection. The whiteness and purity of the lily is said to represent Mary, mother of Jesus. The three petals also represent the Holy Trinity.
Colors:
- Red: Blood of the Lamb and of our beloved martyr, St. Vivian
- White: purity
- Gold: wealth “Knowledge is wealth, wisdom is treasure, understanding is riches, and ignorance is poverty.” - Matshona Dhliwayo
Athletic Logo
St. Vivian is "Home of the Sabres".
In the Christian faith, two swords crossed upward symbolizes the readiness to fight evil. As teachers, administration and parents, it is their duty to protect their children from deception and evil while guiding them toward truth and beauty. I found a few old yearbooks where students had drawn swords crossed, and the original file that the Boosters had was a low resolution .jpeg image. (The image used on their social media and flyers was actually a photo of the logo stitched on a shirt!)
I kept the crossed swords, but added more of an angle so the swords themselves formed a "V". I also kept the same curvature and font as the Academic logo.
Gym Logo
As part of school uniform code, children in first - eighth grade are required to wear a PE uniform for gym class. The client wanted a simple logo for gym shirts, shorts and sweatpants. The Vivian "V" was places in the center and same font was used for the school name.
Branding
Within this scope of work, we established a clearer mission and vision, which were printed in the school handbook. I also designed a prospectus to be given when potential families were to tour the school or during the school's annual open house. Finally I have designed digital and print ads and signage that stay true to the school branding.
Prospectus
Website
The school had a website in place, but it was outdated as the person who established the website no longer worked for the school and no one else had been trained to update the site. I took it from being a very simple only partially working site to adding visuals, easy to find links, and updated information for families.
